"Broken Cisterns": 4/4/25
The Daily Sword 4/4/25
Good morning gentlemen,
My quiet time this morning was in Jeremiah 2…
"Be appalled at this, O heavens, and shudder with great horror," declares the Lord. "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water." (Jeremiah 2:12-13)
God states His people committed two sins….
“They forsook Him, the Spring of Living Water….” They turned from living a life of obedience that glorified God first, put God first, and trusted God first….Living that life is the only life that quenches the thirst of our soul and brings us true satisfaction and fulfillment this side of eternity….
Instead, they pursued the pleasures of the world, and the things of the world to “quench their thirst” and to bring “fulfillment and happiness” in their lives….
God states their attempts were the same as “Digging and drinking from their own broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”
Cisterns were pits dug in natural rock that were used to collect rainwater and runoff water. The inside of them were coated in plaster to prevent seepage. At best a cistern would yield dirty and stagnant water….
Over time, cisterns would suffer cracks in the plaster lining allowing the water to seep out leaving only the slimy sludge, and the muddy mire at the bottom….
When we put the things of this world over the things of God, and we try to live our lives outside God’s will, we are attempting to quench our thirst and satisfy our soul by drinking from a broken, slimy, muddy, cistern that has no water. Our attempts are futile!
What is it that you are living for and searching for in life? What are you prioritizing? What is it that you live to pursue every day? What void are you vainly trying to fill?
Is it money? Things? Success? Power? Achievement? Self? Recognition? Fame? What is it for you?
Do you relentlessly prioritize and pursue comfort and happiness in activities or vices?
Your career? Sports? Hobbies? Spending money? Things? Substance abuse? Sex? Porn? Food? The list goes on and on….What’s yours?
What is it that brings you a FALSE happiness and comfort? What “broken cisterns” are you trying to quench your thirst from?
Everyone’s answer is different, yet every reason is the same. We all have the same common denominator….
Each one of us is searching for something in the depth of our soul to bring fulfillment, joy, peace, and happiness in life…In every human being a “void” and a “thirst” exists, and we are all seeking to fill that void, and quench that thirst….
All sought after titles, behaviors, vices, addictive habits, and sinful choices that “feel good and fill us” are the result of pursuing something to satisfy this thirst and void in our soul…
However, God calls them, “Cisterns that are broken and cannot hold water.”
Nothing we pursue in life will quench our soul-thirst! Nothing in this life will fill this void! No achievement, no amount of money….Absolutely nothing!
The human soul has been relentlessly searching to quench this soul thirst since the fall of mankind into sin. Relentlessly and vainly looking for anything in this life to fill this void and quench this thirst.
Believer or unbeliever, known or not yet known, this is what every human being is searching for…..
Sin entered and brought separation between God and man….And the human soul has had one pursuit since…..To be reconciled to His Creator!!!
God refers to Himself as the “Spring of Living Water…” God is an eternal fountain of Living Water! It constantly flows and is the only Water that permanently quenches and satisfies your thirst! It is the only Water that brings refreshment to our thirsty souls!
Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks of this well water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the Water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14)
The only thing that fully quenches and refreshes our soul-thirst is the “Spring of Living Water.” Jesus!
Jesus is the only source of true and lasting refreshment, satisfaction, and fulfillment in life, and only He can satisfy what the soul is searching for.
“If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink…and out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38)
Israel left the purity of the “Living Water” for the pollution of contaminated broken cisterns that offered no water at all….
Any time we attempt to meet our own needs….
Become Self-indulgent….
Choose our way instead of God’s way….
Pursue our own paths of materialism, worldliness, and fulfillment….
Or try to accomplish anything without God….
We are turning to broken, slimy, muddy cisterns that cannot hold water.
The pursuit of the things and pleasures of the world will leave you exhausted for they will never satisfy….They will only leave you thirstier that you were before!
The only One who can quench that thirst is Jesus! He is our Living Water! He is the fountain that never runs dry!
Gentlemen, let’s stop digging our own broken cisterns to drink from, and turn to the eternal “Spring of Living Water!”
Surrender to Him and live your life in step with Him! He’s waiting for you to come to Him! And He’s eager to “fill the void” and “quench the thirst” that only be done by Him!
Let’s abandon our broken cisterns and go make it a great day for Him!
Love y’all,
